Pupils of the Week, Pancake Tuesday, Special Awards and a Birthday!

Here are our February pupils of the week.

Well done you guys!

On Pancake Tuesday teacher brought in some pancakes and different toppings.

We chose either honey, honey, jam or sugar and lemon to put on top of the pancake. They were delicious!

Here are two girls who have not missed a day! They got a special certificate to mark their achievement.

We also had a birthday in February.

Happy Birthday!

Fun in February with Aistear

We are continuing with Aistear this month. However we have changed some of the activities.

The Travel Agents

We take turns being the travel agents and the customers. The travel agents help the customers book a holiday. We decide where we want to go on holidays, where we will stay when we are there, how we will get there and the different things we can do there.

The Cars

There have been a lot of crashes and traffic jams since we started playing with the cars. We have to sort things out! We call the garda and the ambulance to help.

Water

We learned about full and empty one week. The next week we learned about waterproof and not waterproof. This week we are learning about floating and singing.

Bingo

We play bingo with Ms O'Flaherty. The first two weeks we played bingo using pictures of vehicles. These past two weeks we have played letter bingo.

Cutting and Fine Motor Skills

We had different cutting activities every week. The first week we worked in our groups to sort different types of shoes. The second week we made love bugs for Valentine's Day. Last week we coloured and cut out boats and this week we are sequencing travelling on a bus. If we finish before play time is over we use the beads and links.

Starfall

We use the Starfall website in class. Click on the picture to go to the website. Click on a letter we have learned, Here you will hear the correct letter sound. You will also be introduced to words that start with that letter. It is good practice to do this at home and to think about other words that start with the sounds we know!

Wonderful Writing - c, a, d, g

We have started our formal writing.

We sit properly in our chairs with our two feet flat on the ground. We hold the crayon in our writing hand and we hold our other hand flat on the copy so it does not move when we are writing.

We started with the letter c.

You start at the top, go back up, all around and stop to make a c.

On Tuesday we did our rainbow c. On Wednesday we completed two lines of c in our writing copy and on Thursday we finished the page in our writing copies. On Friday we did the page about the letter c in our writing book.

The next week we learned how to write the letter a.

You start at the top, go back up and all around like a c, straight up and straight down with a kick.

Following this we learned how to write the letter d.

You start at the dot, go back up, all around like a c, straight up, up, up, up, up and straight down, down, down with a kick.

Last week we learned how to write the letter g.

You start at the dot, go back up, all around like a c, straight up and straight down, down, down under the line and kick it back.

Keep practising boys and girls!

Sight Words 1

Sight words are commonly used words that young children are encouraged to memorise as a whole by sight, so that they can automatically recognise these words in print without having to use any strategies to decode them.

So far we have learned ten sight words.

To introduce each word I read a story which contains the word on each page.

You can read these stories with your children. Ask your child to find the words they know.
Some stories are a pdf file from mothershubbard.com, others are in powerpoint.

The Church Beside Our School

Last week we learned a little bit about the church beside our school. It is very old - it's a lot older than our grannies and grandads!

We visited the church.

We saw rings on the wall outside the church. That is where the people tied their horses when they went into the church.

We went inside the church. We sat on a pew which is a church bench. We said a prayer. We saw lots of candles. We met a priest who showed us the clothes he wears when he says mass. One girl even got to try on the priests' stole.

We looked at the windows. They are so pretty and colourful. They are called stained glass windows.

We looked at the big old doors at the front of the church. Those doors have been there since the church was built. That's a long, long time ago!

When we got back to class we drew pictures of the church.
